Masterclass for 20th-century music

Would you like to learn the music of a Swiss composer of the 20th century? If so, the chamber music course «Hommage à J.-F. Zbinden» is the right choice for you.

Julien-François Zbinden, who was born in Lausanne and died in 2020 at the age of 103, lived through an entire century of musical creation as a composer, pianist and radio producer. His extraordinary œuvre of over 100 works covers all genres, from solo instrumental pieces to opera. With the support of his heirs Pascale and Tristan Juillerat, the Loc.Atrium association organises an annual masterclass in which various chamber music works by the artist are rehearsed over the course of a week. The course is led by renowned musicians who knew Julien-François Zbinden personally and have performed and interpreted his music on commission all over the world.

This year, the course will focus on J.-F. Zbinden's music for keyboard instruments and solo violin (with or without keyboard). The course will take place at the Centre de Musique Hindemith in Blonay (VD), in an idyllic setting just 10 minutes from the lake. Under the artistic direction of composer Richard Dubugnon* and his team. A small, select group of young talents will perform works by Bartók, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Ravel, Frank Martin, Poulenc and other composers, as well as works by Julien-François Zbinden.

The final concert will take place on Saturday 24 August at 5.00 pm with all participants.

* The Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon, who lives in Paris, is one of the most frequently performed composers of his generation. Soloists such as Janine Jansen, Gautier Capuçon, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Xavier de Maistre as well as conductors such as Paavo Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Antonio Pappano have championed him. His music is regularly performed by orchestras from all over the world. He also works as principal double bass with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and as a freelance chamber musician.
